Gainsborough Trinity manager Paul Mitchell believes his side can cause an upset against Hartlepool in The FA Cup First Round on Sunday - since a number of players have something special to prove to the opposition.

Trinity, from the Conference North division, include a host of names who have previously played under current Hartlepool boss Danny Wilson.

Mitchell is hoping that will give them an extra reason to put one over the League One side and progress into the Second Round.

"A few of the lads played under Danny when they were trying to make the grade and our midfielder Alex Callary played under Hartlepool’s Director of Football, Chris Turner, when he was manager of Sheffield Wednesday," explained Mitchell.

"They’ve got a point to prove and they’ll be up for the challenge. This game means a lot to them.

"We’re probably a Cup side and a lot of it may come down to whether it’s meant to be. Teams that are top of the league at our level are not necessarily good in the cups, but we know that we can beat anyone on the day. Cup football is different."

Gainsborough will try to make home advantage pay dividends and are aiming to make the atmosphere as electric as possible.

"Being at home is massive for us,” he added.

“We want everyone to bring their mothers, grandmothers, friends and family down with them.

"We’re trying to pull in as many people as we can and get a big crowd. We want to generate a real Cup atmosphere because it’s a big day for us.

"We struggle financially and at our level we need to generate all the finance we can. Having this run should allow us to keep the players we’ve got."
