Former Bristol Rovers striker Barry Hayles has a lot of affection for his former club and believes they have the right man in Paul Trollope to take them forward in The FA Cup.

League One Rovers are not having the best of seasons in the League but have hit form in The Cup and will hope they have enough to give Southampton a test, with Saints battling at the wrong end of the Championship table.

Hayles, who signed for Leicester in January, made his first steps in League football with Rovers when he signed from non-League Stevenage Borough in 1996.

The striker went on to score 35 goals at Rovers' Memorial Stadium in just over a year before Kevin Keegan made him Fulham's record signing for £2m, where he teamed up with future Rovers manager Trollope.

"I always look out for my old clubs and I am really pleased that Bristol Rovers are going so well in The FA Cup," said Hayles.

"It was a bit of a strange one for me when Bristol Rovers played Fulham in the Third Round, because you can't want both sides to win.

"But I'm delighted they got through and they now have a good chance against Southampton to go even further."

The Leicester striker speaks very highly of Trollope and says he always believed he would make the step up into management.

"Paul has a great football brain," added Hayles. "I could see that in my time at Fulham with him.

"He could read the game very well and always knew the next pass before he received the ball.

"I think he has assembled a good squad. They are going great guns in The FA Cup and I hope they can go a bit further."
