Sam Lacey produced the performance of a lifetime to help Hatfield Town clinch a hard-fought victory at Brimsdown Rovers in The FA Cup Extra Preliminary Round.
The Town goalkeeper kept the home side at bay throughout with a series of stunning saves, before Jason Beck's spectacular strike and Daniel Staples' second-half effort sealed the win.
Trevor Lloyd's men looked the more accomplished of the teams, but were unable to stamp their authority on the contest in a closely fought first-half as Rovers hassled and harried their opponents.
However, there was nothing they could do about Town's opener just before the break as Beck's cross-cum-shot flew into the net to the striker's disbelief.
While the Rovers players were left wondering if Beck's strike had been intentional, they were caught by a sucker punch just after the restart as Staples bundled the ball home from close range after confusion in the home defence.
That goal killed off any hopes Rovers might have had of a comeback and Town secretary Ted Collie was left to reflect on a successful afternoon for the Hertfordshire club.
"We played really well in the second-half," said Collie.
"The first-half was quite even and Lacey was simply fantastic in goal, it was the performance of a lifetime.
"He stopped everything and Rovers just couldn't find a way past him."
Collier also paid tribute to the goalscorers, insisting Beck's strike was intentional, despite the reservations of his team-mates.
"I thought he meant it," added Collier.
"The two forwards, Beck and Staples, were superb all afternoon but I think credit must go to the manager.
"Trevor was spot on tactically and the Brimsdown staff told us we were the better team. We're absolutely delighted."
