The FA Cup is back and in the season's first game, Brading Town caused an upset by beating Wantage Town 3-1 at Alfredian Park.

In front of ITV cameras, the Hellenic League side were expected to advance from the Extra Preliminary Round, but Brading of the Wessex Premier League, nicknamed the Romans, put in a gladiatorial performance to march into the next round.

After an evenly contested opening 15 minutes, the visitors went in front through Dave Greening, who evaded the offside trap and cracked an angled shot past Luke Alford.

Scott Jones then had a goal harshly chalked off for Brading, but the 17-year-old did double the advantage in the 43rd minute when he turned on the edge of the area and fired a stinging shot into the top corner.

And on the stroke of half-time, Brading put the tie out of Wantage's reach, when Alford inexplicably bowled the ball to Greening, who needed no second invitation to score.

Ellis Langford reduced the deficit 10 minutes into the second half from point blank range after Brading had failed to clear a corner.

Paul Day had the chance to set up a grandstand finish 12 minutes from time, after Jack Daley had been felled in the penalty area.

However, his spot kick rattled the crossbar, ending his side's FA Cup aspirations for another season.
