Portsmouth lift The FA Cup at Wembley for the first time in 69 years, beating Cardiff City thanks to a strike from Kanu. |
Harry Redknapp's Portsmouth only conceded one goal en route to lifting this season's FA Cup.
That's one goal in the whole competition. They came in at the Third Round Proper stage as a Premiership club and their results were 1-0 v Ipswich Town, 2-1 v Plymouth Argyle, 1-0 v Preston North End, 1-0 v Manchester United, 1-0 v West Bromwich Albion and, of course, 1-0 v Cardiff City in Saturday's Final.
Can any other FA Cup winner match that? Well, yes, it's happened more often than you might think.
These are the teams that let in just one goal on their victorious charge:-
Wanderers in 1872 and 1877; Oxford University in 1874; Clapham Rovers in 1880; Bradford City in 1911; Aston Villa in 1913; Preston North End in 1938; Manchester City in 1969; Everton in 1984 and 1995.
Three teams actually won The Cup without conceding a goal in any round, including The Final.
Wanderers had a bye to The Final in 1873, when it really was a 'Challenge Cup', and beat Oxford University 2-0. Preston North End kept a clean sheet in five games in 1889 and so did Bury in 1903.
Wanderers also hold the record for being The FA Cup winners with the fewest goals scored in the competition, i.e. two.
