The weekend's eight FA Cup Fifth Round ties attracted 248,795 fans, producing an average of 31,099 per tie.
This is the highest since 1981, when the average for the completed round was 32,053. In that year the clubs drawn at home were Ipswich, Middlesbrough, Newcastle, Nottingham Forest, Peterborough, Southampton, Tottenham and Wolves.
Old Trafford, as expected, led the way at the weekend with a typically huge 75,550 for Arsenal's visit. There were 42,449 to see Barnsley's shock win at Anfield and 41,324 to see holders Chelsea beat off the challenge of plucky Huddersfield.
Bristol Rovers' Memorial Stadium 'only' had 11,920 for their tie with Southampton - but that was up to capacity.
The viewing figures were strong once more as a peak audience of 8.9million tuned in to BBC1 to see Manchester United take on Arsenal, while 4.3million watched Match of the Day later that day as the highlights from Saturday's six ties were repeated.
The Sixth Round draw, with only three Premiership sides definitely through, will be made at 1.25pm today. Mark Bright and Geoff Thomas from Crystal Palace's 1990 Final team are doing the honours.
