Portsmouth manager Harry Redknapp spoke to TheFA.com after his side's FA Cup Final triumph over Cardiff City at Wembley.

"It's a fantastic feeling, said Redknapp after the match.

"With the build up to the game lots of people thought Portsmouth would beat Cardiff, and I knew it would be difficult today.

"Cardiff had a real go and made it difficult for us, so to win The Cup is a great relief and a fantastic feeling."

Nwankwo Kanu proved to be the match-winner thanks to his 37th minute goal, but he could have scored even earlier after an audacious piece of skill left him with an open goal, only for the big Nigerian to hit the outside of the post when it looked easier to score.

"He showed terrific skill and then he's only got to roll it in the goal and he hits the post," said Redknapp in disbelief.

"I thought, 'Oh my God, perhaps it's going to be one of those days,' but the big man came back and scored not long after so it was great."

"He scored the two goals - the one in the Semi and the one today - that won The Cup for us so I'm delighted for him.  He's a great lad as well."

Despite taking the lead before half-time, however, Redknapp didn't let his side rest on their laurels.

"There was still a long way to go," he explained.

"At half time I said, 'Look, we're going to need another goal. We've got to keep pressing forward if we can.'

"But [Cardiff] pushed us back late on.  They started pushing people forward, the big centre half went up front and they bombed balls into the box and gave us a few problems.  But when you've got David James in goal and Sol [Campbell] and Sylvain [Distin] at the back you always feel you've got a chance of keeping a clean sheet."

And that's exactly what happened.  As Cardiff piled forward desperately in search of a late equaliser, Redknapp's well-drilled defence repelled the Bluebirds' attacks to keep a vital clean sheet.

Those last few moments were agonising for the Pompey fans and management alike, as Redknapp explained.

"I must be honest, I couldn’t wait for the referee to blow that whistle," he admitted.

"It was the nicest feeling in the world when he blew it!"

For a man whose quest for major silverware had finally ended, his thoughts lay with the fans and - after a difficult few weeks for them - his family.

"I'm delighted for everybody, I'm just so pleased to have done it.  It's a great day for the fans, we've got great support and they've come here today and to see us win The Cup is fantastic for them.

"All my family and my grandchildren are here.  It's a great day for all of us.  I think we needed that at the moment."

So, after achieving a dream, what's next on the agenda for Harry Redknapp?

"Let's see if we can win The Cup again next year," he said.

"We'll improve in the summer, get one or two new faces in and improve the squad and who knows?

"We're in the UEFA Cup now, which is great.  It's great for the club to be in European competition.  It’s a great day for Portsmouth Football Club.

"The fans have had a day to remember for the rest of their lives, so that's the most important thing for me."
