A solitary Robbie Keane goal helped Spurs progress to the Fourth Round of The FA Cup at the expense of Reading and set up a mouth-watering tie at Old Trafford against last season’s runners-up Manchester United.
Keane, who had not scored in any of his previous five matches, nudged one closer to his Spurs century with the decisive moment of the game in the 14th minute.
Younes Kaboul had a header tipped onto the bar by Adam Federici following a Jermaine Jenas corner and the Republic of Ireland forward reacted smartly to stab home from close range.
Reading twice came close to forcing extra time in the closing moments. First when Stephen Hunt, who scored twice at White Hart Lane to force this replay, rattled the bar with a dipping volley and with seven minutes remaining Radek Cerny did well do shovel away a Simon Cox header.
West Bromwich Albion required penalties to beat Championship rivals Charlton after letting a two-goal lead slip.
Roman Bednar (pictured above) had given the home side an early advantage and James Morrison doubled the lead after the break with a low skidding shot from 25 yards to seemingly set the Baggies on their way.
However, Charlton fought back with two late strikes from Darren Ambrose and Chris Dickson to force extra time.
The additional half an hour produced plenty of action but no further goals, leaving Dean Kiely to prove heroics in the shootout against his former club.
Luke Varney and Jonathan Greening exchanged misses before Kiely plunged to his right to deny Zheng Zhi, allowing Bednar to smash home the decisive spot kick.
Elsewhere, Bury of League Two pulled off the shock of the night by knocking out Championship side Norwich City.
The managerless Shakers took the lead after 15 minutes when Ben Futcher applied the finishing touch from six-yards after an almighty scramble.
Andy Bishop doubled the lead after the re-start and although Dion Dublin pulled a goal back late on, Bury survived to set-up a meeting with Southampton at St Mary's in the next round.
Meanwhile, Millwall will travel to the Ricoh Arena in a fortnight’s time to face Coventry after goals from Ben May and Gary Alexander ruled Alex Nicholls’ late response for Walsall academic.
