Barnsley will be smiling as they make the long journey back to Yorkshire having put their name in the hat for the Fifth Round of The FA Cup with a hard fought victory at Southend United.

The game will be remembered as the Muller and Campbell-Ryce show for Simon Davey's side with former Southend winger Jamal giving the Tykes the lead, he had his teammate Heinz Muller to thank as the German stopper made a series of fine saves to keep Southend out.

Barnsley started the tie brightly with a vocal backing from their strong travelling support as they pressed Southend onto the back foot in the opening exchanges. Hassell quickly became an intimidating presence in the tackle, while Ricketts and Campbell-Ryce looked to join the attack wherever possible.

Daniel Nardiello spurned the first chance of the game just five minutes into his return to the Oakwell club. Coming back to Barnsley for a fourth spell, Nardiello was played through by Hassell on the left side of the area before opening up and looking to curl the ball into the far post. Despite having a great deal of time to pick his spot, the shot went wide and the first chance was gone.

That opportunity seemed to swing the balance in favour of the home side who started to create openings of their own. Stretching the Barnsley backline Steve Tilson's side were unfortunate when Mark Gower went through on goal only to be flagged for offside.

Gower was again in the thick of Southend's pressure as they began to force their Yorkshire rivals onto the backfoot, firing a powerful drive from 20 yards out that Muller was unable to hold onto.

Just as it seemed the home side had settled Jamal Campbell-Ryce opened the scoring with a thunderous, swerving effort that Darryl Flahavan could not keep out. Cutting inside from the left flank, Campbell-Ryce drove the ball with his right foot and the late deviation on the ball gave him a terrific goal on his return to his former club.

Barnsley looked like they were going to run away with it before the break as they created a flurry of chances. First Rohan Ricketts turned inside from the right wing to fire a left-footed drive at goal that took a fine block from Peter Clarke to force a corner, then from the resultant set-piece Dennis Souza rose highest only to be denied by a fine save from Flahavan.

Gary Hooper almost levelled the scores right on the stroke of half time with a cheeky backheel from close range but Heinz Muller did well to read the attempt and save with his feet.

Steve Tilson made no changes at the interval, but therre was almost an immediate change to the scoreline as Tommy Black fired a fierce effort at goal just moments into the second half. Muller was again equal to the effort but the home fans were buoyed by the early chance to hit back.

The Shrimpers spurned another fine chance 15 minutes into the second period as McCormack was picked out superbly by Mark Gower, only to flash his shot wide of the post with the goal gaping. While there were attackers waiting square of McCormack the midfielder had every right to shoot, but simply dragged the left-footed effort wide of the far post.

The introduction of Tottenham Hotspur forward Lee Barnard, on loan at Roots Hall, provided further impetus as the momentum seemed with the home side. Tommy Black hit a high drive that Muller did well to tip over the bar and from the corner Adam Barrett forced a header at goal only for Muller to deny the Blues once more.
