Leeds United’s first appearance in The FA Cup first round ended in a goalless draw at Edgar Street against Hereford. The League Two high-flyers enjoyed the better of the chances and could easily have caused an upset.

But with a money-spinning replay on the cards at Elland Road, for now at least, Graham Turner’s side can console themselves with the fact they become only the second side this season to have prevented Leeds scoring in a game.

Hereford made a frenetic start to proceedings and quickly pegged their illustrious opponents back inside their own half.

Trevor Benjamin, a bustling presence throughout, was unlucky not to be awarded a penalty when his chances of meeting a left-wing cross were hampered by the attentions of Matty Heath, who appeared to have grabbed hold of the striker’s shirt.

Theo Robinson was the next to test visiting goalkeeper Casper Ankergren with a powerful shot, but the Dane was equal to his stinging attempt.

It took Leeds until midway through the opening period to gain a foothold in the game as Hereford began to pay the cost for their high-octane start.

Seb Carole fired in a shot on 23 minutes which Wayne Brown did well to field and Tresor Jermaine Beckford was unlucky to see an overhead attempt drift harmlessly over the crossbar.

Brown was then brave to dive at the feet of Jonathan Douglas as Leeds tried to engineer the breakthrough before half-time.

The second period began in a similar fashion to the first and Benjamin again was a whisker away from breaking the stalemate. The former Leicester striker rose to meet a right-wing corner and beat Ankergren to the punch but could not steer his flicked header inside the post.

Robinson was again inchies away from handing Hereford the lead but his cross shot was only narrowly off target after an adventurous run had carried him into a shooting position.

At the other end, Brown had to be alet to palm away another Ben Parker effort from distance.

Hereford finished the stronger of the two teams and had to glittering chances to steal a win.

First when Lionel Ainworth’s point-blank header was flipped over by Ankergren and with three minutes to go, John McCombe somehow hooked wide on the turn when only six-yards from goal.
