A total of 36 ties were settled by replay this midweek as teams up and down the country battled for a place in the First Round Qualifying of The FA Cup.

Dereham Town and Deeping Rangers were expected to produce a bundle of goals after scoring 17 between them in the previous round but in the event it took only one goal in 180 minutes of football to separate the sides.

After gaining a dogged goalless draw at Deeping, Dereham manager Rob Taylor was expecting his side to finish the job at home.

But the Norfolk club got off to a poor start when they conceded in the very first minute, with Danny Matson the Deeping goalscoring hero. Despite being cheered on by a crown of 230 the home side could not respond and take the tie into extra-time, much to the frustration of Taylor.

"We had a lot of the ball but failed to crack them in the final third. Over the two games they deserved it as we didn’t perform to our potential," he said.

Taylor believes that his young side will benefit from the experience gained against strong opposition and can achieve their objective of promotion to the Ryman League.

"We were never going to win The Cup. Our main objective is the league, but obviously any success in The Cup is good for the club," he said.

Five other ties did go all the way to penalties, however, with both Crowborough Athletic and Horley Town winning 6-5, against Hailsham Town and East Preston respectively.

Barton Rovers and Gedling Town proved to be the most dominant teams - both winning 5-0 in their matches, with the most thrilling tie coming on Monday night when Sutton Coldfield drew 4-4 at Romulus before winning 7-6 on penalties.
