Middlesbrough manager Gareth Southgate
"I’m disappointed as the lads have given everything. We were on the back foot in the first half but I’m proud of the players who gave absolutely everything in the second.
"I can see why he gave the penalty as George’s hands were up, but he was only a yard away so there wasn’t much he could do about it. We don’t like to criticise referees but I’m not sure what else he could have done.
"The players are disappointed, but we’re still in the draw and will be fighting. United fielded their strongest side yet still couldn’t beat us."
Middlesbrough captain George Boateng
"I’m devastated and can’t believe it.
"I’m disappointed about the penalty. Mine was a natural instinctive reaction to protect my face. My hands were in front of me but there was nothing else I could do.
"It’s been a difficult year for us though we’ve done it the hard way and I think we deserved to win today. We now have another tough match at Old Trafford but we’ll give them a good game and hopefully the better team will win."
Manchester United manager Sir Alex Ferguson
"We dominated the first half, created a lot of chances and it was one of the best performances we’ve put in for a long time. They scored just before the break and it brought them back into the game.
"It was bad marking from us for their second goal though at United we never give up - and we deservedly scored the equaliser.
"We’ll approach the replay as we did this game and will use our full pool of players. We have Bolton on the Saturday so there will be a few changes to be made like we did in the Reading game though we’d rather be in the Cup than not and we’re still firing on three fronts."
