Middlesbrough squeezed into The FA Cup quarter finals after overcoming battling West Brom on penalties.

West Brom’s young Dutch midfielder Sherjill MacDonald missed the decisive spot kick as Gareth Southgate’s Premiership side set up a home tie with Manchester United.

A shock looked on the cards in the first half when West Brom midfielder Darren Carter fired the Championship high flyers in front with a low left foot shot past Brad Jones.

Carter then wasted a good chance to double Albion’s advantage after the break before Boro were level on 63 minutes, albeit with the help of lady luck.

Stuart Parnaby provided the cross for Mark Viduka whose shot was deflected in on off Curtis Davies and beyond keeper Dean Kiely.

With the scores level after 90 minutes, the home side were reduced to ten men minutes into extra time when Nathan Ellington was shown a straight red card for a late challenge on Parnaby.

Boro failed to capitalise on their man advantage and the match headed for penalties.

Lee Dong-Gook and Neil Clement both missed as it went into sudden death with the scores at 4-4.

But after George Boateng slotted home, Boro were left cheering when MacDonald fired over the bar to send them through.
