Middlesbrough did it the hard way as they beat Bristol City 5-4 in a sudden-death penalty shoot-out to book a home Fifth Round tie with West Brom.
The Premiership side had to come from behind against the plucky League One outfit on a night of high drama at the Riverside.
Young winger Adam Johnson struck the decisive spot-kick after Boro keeper Mark Schwarzer had saved from Phil Jevons and Craig Woodman, and Yakubu had hit a post for the home side. It was a night of heroes and villains and Yakubu and City defender Jamie McCombe played out both roles.
Nigerian Yakubu won a 95th-minute penalty when he was tripped by McCombe, but his weak spot-kick was saved by keeper Chris Weale.
However, Yakubu made amends seven minutes later with a close-range tap-in after Weale could only parry substitute Johnson's shot.
But McCombe took the tie to penalties when he scuffed home to make it 2-2 from Scott Murray's cross four minutes from the end of extra-time.
Boro, weakened by the absence of injured duo Jonathan Woodgate and Julio Arca - and with striker Mark Viduka starting on the bench - were stunned when City seized a 23rd-minute lead through midfielder David Noble.
The one-time Arsenal youngster cashed in with only his second goal for City in 43 games after the offside trap was sprung.
But Viduka emerged after the break to register his fourth goal in this season's competition and level in the 69th minute.
Boro failed to impose any authority in the first half; Yakubu's 17th-minute drive was narrowly wide, but that was all the home side mustered before City struck. Alex Russell's through-ball from halfway found Noble, who was played onside by left-back Andrew Taylor.
And Noble was left completely in the clear to advance into the box and beat Schwarzer with a right-footed finish that squirmed in off the keeper.
Boro almost hit back moments later when rookie right-back Seb Hines, who scored on his debut in the last round against Hull, saw his header from a corner hit striker Malcolm Christie and fly wide.
Christie made way for Viduka and the Australia star hauled his side back into the game. England winger Stewart Downing delivered a teasing right-wing cross and Viduka was unmarked as he glanced in from close range.
Downing and Johnson then both hit the woodwork in stunning fashion as extra-time loomed.
In the night's other replay at Carrow Road Norwich secured a trip to Premiership champions Chelsea after teenage striker Chris Martin came off the bench to grab a 3-2 win over Blackpool after extra-time.
Michael Jackson set up a thriller when he handed League One Blackpool a 37th-minute lead. But the Championship strugglers hit back through a Darren Huckerby double and Shaun Barker looked to have forced penalties before Martin struck.
