Tuesday night's FA Cup sponsored by E.ON Third Round replay action started with the early disappointment of QPR's tie at Luton being postponed due to a waterlogged pitch at a quarter to seven.

The magic of The Cup had been well and truly restored just over three hours later when Championship side Hull came back from three-nil down only to lose 4-3 at Premiership Middlesbrough.

A first half goal from Seb Hines gave the hosts a 1-0 lead at the interval and after Mark Viduka and an Aiyegbeni Yakubu penalty put Gareth Southgate's men three ahead early in the second period the Teesiders looked to be cruising into the next round.

But the visitors had other ideas and when Andrew Dawson and Jonathan Parkin brought the score back to 3-2 the contest was on.

Viduka made it 4-2 on 64 minutes but when Dawson replied with his second, five minutes later, it set up a thrilling finish.
It was a night of classic Cup action.

One of the main games featured Manchester City earning a Fourth Round clash with Southampton after they narrowly beat Sheffield Wednesday 2-1 at Eastlands.

The opening 45 minutes featured chances for both sides with City's Darius Vassell twice going through on goal and Graham Coughlan missing a free header for the visitors.

But it was City who took the lead just before the break. Joey Barton, who was City's best performer, cleverly picked out fellow midfielder Stephen Ireland to shoot home.

The goal was hard on Wednesday who, thanks largely to striker Steven MacLean, had controlled long spells of the first half.

But Wednesday were not behind for long as they leveled matters five minutes after the restart; Lee Bullpen scored with a fine header from Chris Brunt's free-kick.

However, their joy was short-lived as Stuart Pearce's men regained the lead three minutes later. Vassell, who had been guilty of missing a host of chances, finally found the net from 12 yards out for what proved to be the winner.

Also through are Southend, who were 2-0 winners at Barnsley, while Bristol City and Wolverhampton Wanderers are also in the next stage after they recorded the same score-lines at Coventry and Oldham respectively. Wolves now face a classic Midlands derby against West Brom.

Matt Richards was the hero for Ipswich after his 84th minute winner gave them a 1-0 win over Chester City, while Plymouth came from behind to beat Peterborough 2-1 at Home Park. Barnet will be their Fourth Round opponents.
