Some of the weekend's FA Cup Third Round Proper ties have a familiar ring to them with the round's biggest tie featuring the teams who met in the first Cardiff Cup Final in 2001.

Liverpool and Arsenal, who clash at Anfield in one of Saturday's live games on BBC1, have already met eleven times in the competition. Including replays, and there were three in the 1980 Semi-Final alone, they have played each other in 15 Cup matches.

Arsenal have won six and Liverpool five. Their last encounter was at Highbury in 2002, when Arsenal triumphed 1-0. That was revenge for the Gunners who were beaten in Cardiff by Liverpool the season before.

Freddie Ljungberg gave Arsenal a 72nd minute lead, but two late strikes from Michael Owen helped the Reds turn things around to take the honours 2-1.

Arsenal and Liverpool also played each other in the Finals of 1950 (2-0 to Arsenal with a Reg Lewis brace) and 1971 (2-1 to Arsenal with Charlie George's extra-time winner).

Two more of this season's Third Round matches are also repeats of previous FA Cup Finals…

One of Preston North End's eight Cup matches with Sunderland have included The Final of 1937. Preston took the lead at Wembley in the last minute of the first half but a Sunderland side inspired by skipper Raich Carter hit back to win 3-1.

Aston Villa edged Manchester United 2-1 in the 1957 Final, Peter McParland scoring twice for Villa after his early challenge on United 'keeper Ray Wood had fractured the latter's cheekbone.

The two club's have met ten times overall and have yet to draw, the last meeting at Villa Park was a Third Round tie in 2004. United won that one 2-1 with two Paul Scholes goals in reply to Gareth Barry's opener for the home side.

QPR have been drawn against Luton Town nine times and there have been 13 matches between them including replays.

By contrast, Birmingham City's only Cup tie with Newcastle United was more than a hundred years ago and there are several first-time ties at the weekend - like Portsmouth v Wigan, Derby v Wrexham and Torquay v Southampton.
