Jim Smith highlighted his Oxford United side’s resilience following the club’s priceless 1-0 win over fellow Conference promotion chasers Dagenham at Victoria Road.
A penalty from Oxford’s leading marksman Rob Duffy was enough to win The FA Cup tie and sets up an exciting first round meeting with League neighbours Wycombe Wanderers.
Smith praised his team’s defensive display believes that the game against Paul Lambert’s men will be an ideal test to gauge just how his players have come so far this season.
Smith said: “Our defence was magnificent. The tie against Wycombe is the nearest thing we could have got to a home game and it will be a really good yardstick to see how good our team is this season.”
AFC Wimbledon’s FA Cup dream came to an end at Exeter City with the home side narrowly winning 2-1, but boss Dave Anderson was pleased with his team’s second half showing.
Over 1500 fans made the trip from south London to Devon and Dons boss Anderson was chuffed with the fact that Roscoe D’Sane’s goal gave them something to cheer about.
Anderson said: “We wanted to do something for the supporters that had travelled a long way and I was delighted we got the goal.
“In the second half I thought we were good, but we saw the difference between the two levels in the first half.”
Maidenhead United made it through to the first round after defeating Merthyr Tydfil with Lee Newman scoring the all-important goal with 20 minutes of the tie remaining.
FA Cup specialists Yeading got a huge reward for defeating St Albans City – a first round meeting against former European Cup winners Nottingham Forest.
Two goals from Nevin Saroya helped the west London club through to the glamour tie against Colin Calderwood’s side.
Mario Noto’s early goal gave Chelmsford a big win over much-fancied Gravesend and Northfleet and the Essex club look to be the surprise package in the competition this season.
