Peter Schmeichel is the first name to be revealed from The FA Cup 'Team of Heroes'
Schmeichel gets the voteMonday, 08 May 2006.
Ahead of Saturday's FA Cup Final we reveal the lineup of The FA Cup 'Team of Heroes' as voted for by you the fans. The competition began to commemorate the incredible contribution of the players in 125 years - and after more than 10,000 votes we have our team.
Our search began in earnest in December and gave the top 125 ranked FA Cup clubs their chance to nominate their five Cup legends - one keeper, one defender, one midfielder, one forward and a manager
From the nominations our panel of specialists narrowed them down to a shortlist of 125 - with 25 for each position. We then put it down to you, the fans.
You voted for your own Team of Heroes from our final list in a 4-3-3 formation and now it is time for all those who voted to find out if their choice matches that of the the overall poll.
First to be revealed is the number 1 and the safest pair of hands in FA Cup history, and taking the vote ahead of the likes of Bert Trautmann, Dave Beasant and Jim Montgomery is Peter Schmeichel.
The Great Dane, who joined the club in 1991, won the competition with Manchester United three times in the nineties; 1994, 1996 and again in 1999.
He also helped United win an impressive haul of trophies: they won the League Cup in 1992 before securing five Premier League titles from 1993 to 1999.
Add to that the trio of FA Cups in three Double-winning seasons, topped off with a Champions League victory in the historic 1998-99 treble season and a record 129 Danish caps.
In 1994 United not only thumped four past Chelsea with two goals from Eric Cantona and one each from Mark Hughes and Brian McClair, but Schmeichel kept his first of three Cup Final clean sheets.
Paul Rideout remains the only player to have scored past the former Danish International in a Final when he netted for Everton a year later. The 1994 victory meant Manchester United became only the fourth team this century to win League and Cup in the same season along with Tottenham, Arsenal and Liverpool.
They also equalled Spurs' record of eight FA Cup successes. In 1996, following that defeat to Everton a year earlier, United bounced back and Schmeichel was instrumental in their win when he denied Liverpool's Stan Collymore with a great save at his near post. Cantona scored the only goal of the game.
Three years later the FA Cup Final was to be Schmeichel's penultimate game for the club. United had wrapped up the Premiership title six days earlier and were poised to face Bayern Munich in the European Cup Final days later.
United's 2-0 victory against Newcastle United, with goals from Teddy Sheringham and Paul Scholes, was a record tenth win in the competition and also made United the first team to get a treble of League and Cup doubles.
Schmeichel left Wembley with happy memories having made a superb save from Dietmar Hamann and collecting his third and final winner's medal.
Look out tomorrow for the announcement of the four defenders who took your vote
