Denis Irwin celebrates after scoring against Oldham in their FA Cup Semi Final Replay in 1994.
Irwin gets the callTuesday, 09 May 2006.
Ahead of Saturday's FA Cup Final we reveal the lineup of The FA Cup 'Team of Heroes' as voted for by you the fans. The competition began to commemorate the incredible contribution of the players in 125 years - and after more than 10,000 votes we have our team.
Our search began in earnest in December and gave the top 125 ranked FA Cup clubs their chance to nominate their five Cup legends - one keeper, one defender, one midfielder, one forward and a manager
From the nominations our panel of specialists narrowed them down to a shortlist of 125 - with 25 for each position. We then put it down to you, the fans.
You voted for your own Team of Heroes from our final list in a 4-3-3 formation and now it is time for all those who voted to find out if their choice matches that of the the overall poll.
And it is Denis Irwin who has been voted one of the two best full-backs in the history of the famous competition.
The Republic of Ireland defender played in the FA Cup for Leeds, Oldham, Manchester United and Wolves during his 21-year career in football.
Irwin started out at Leeds United as an apprentice but then moved to Oldham Athletic on a free transfer after failing to break into the first-team.
It was his performance in the competition in 1990 which prompted Sir Alex Ferguson to spend £650,000 to bring him to Old Trafford.
Oldham took United to a replay in the semi-final after drawing the first game 3-3, although the Red Devils ultimately won the second match 2-1.
Following his move Irwin never looked back from that point, as he became one of the most successful players in United's history, winning the European Cup Winners Cup, the European Super Cup, the Premier League six times, the FA Cup twice, the League Cup and the European Champions League.
His first success in the FA Cup came in May 1994 when he was on the winning side during a 4-0 drubbing of Chelsea.
He followed that up with another winner's medal in 1996 when United beat arch-rivals Liverpool in the Final at Wembley.
However, Irwin missed out on a hat-trick of winning appearances in 1999 when he was suspended from the Final against Newcastle after being sent off against Liverpool earlier in the month.
After leaving United in 2002, Irwin continued his love affair with the competition, upsetting Newcastle 3-2 in January 2003 while at Wolves before finally hanging up his boots a year later.
