Alan Pardew said he sensed defeat as soon as Steven Gerrard scored a stunning goal in the 90th minute to send The FA Cup Final into extra time.
The Liverpool captain scored with a wonderful half volley that broke West Ham's hearts just when they thought they had won the trophy.
And West Ham manager Pardew said only such a spectacular goal would have stopped his side from lifting the trophy.
He said: "It felt like a defeat when that third goal went in. We rallied in extra time but the best chance fell to a player who was injured and couldn't lift his leg up to kick the ball.
"We thought we were going to win it and it took a 30-yard screamer from Gerrard to stop us, but I could not ask anymore from my players."
