When John Sillett talks about winning one of the greatest FA Cup finals ever, his joy is as fresh as when he danced that famous jig on the Wembley touchline in 1987 following their 3-2 victory over Tottenham Hotspur.

Sillett had been in charge of Coventry for just one year - in tandem with George Curtis - when he took the club to what remains the only trophy in their 123-year history.

The Sky Blues were the underdogs in a thrilling match that saw Clive Allen give Tottenham a second-minute lead and Keith Houchen make the score    2-2, before Gary Mabbutt’s own goal sent the fans from the west Midlands into raptures.

Sillett glows with pride when he describes the length-of-the-pitch move that ended with Houchen’s famous diving header.

"I dream about it sometimes," Sillett says. "A cross like the one Dave Bennett put in comes off three times out of ten in training. For it to come off in one of the biggest games of his life was incredible.

"And to think Keith Houchen could get that much power behind his header was even more amazing."

Sillett settled the nerves of his team by having them train on the Wembley pitch beforehand, and gave them a plan to stifle the threat of Glenn Hoddle, playing his last game for Tottenham.

The dance with Curtis showed his delight at grasping a prize which eluded him in his playing career as a fullback with Coventry, Chelsea and Plymouth.

He added: "It was the elation of the moment, of an achievement you thought had passed you by and was out of your reach. The wonder and amazement that it brought to the fans, I just wanted to join in."

Rewarded with promotion to the manager's post, Sillett was in charge at Highfield Road until 1990.

Despite tasting the flip-side of FA Cup glory when Coventry lost their holders' crown in an embarrassing defeat to non-League Sutton United, his affection for the competition is as strong as ever.

Sillett said: "Every club in the country has the opportunity to play in The FA Cup and win it; you just dream it’s going to be you.

"People try to put down The Cup, but I’ll always love it, because what it did for Coventry City Football Club was unbelievable."

It's now down to you, the fans. You can pick your own Team of Heroes from our final list in a 4-3-3 formation until the closing date of midnight on Monday 24 April 2006.
