Following his towering performance against Chelsea, Colchester United defender Wayne Brown is facing another titanic battle against Premiership opposition, in the Player of the Round award and this time you can help him by voting in our online poll.
The League one star, in commanding form throughout Colchester’s 3–1 defeat against Premiership champions Chelsea in yesterday’s FA Cup Fifth Round tie, is the only non-Premiership player to be nominated for the award.
He faces stiff competition from Jamie Carragher, who steered Liverpool to their first FA Cup victory over Manchester United at Anfield for 85 years and Middlesbrough’s two-goal hero Yakubu, who ended Preston North End’s 25-match unbeaten run.
Manchester City’s 17-year-old Micah Richards, who scored the last gasp equaliser against Premiership rivals Aston Villa, and Birmingham City’s international ‘keeper Maik Taylor, who made several outstanding saves to keep a clean sheet in the 1–0 win over Stoke City, are also in the running.
Fans are now being urged to vote for the players in our online poll before the closing date of 27 February, and if you enter our competition before midday on Friday, you could be in with a chance to win two tickets to the Sixth Round match of your choice.
The player with the most votes will become the eighth FA Cup ‘Player of the Round’ this season and will win £1000 worth of UMBRO football kit for a local school, club or organisation.
He will also receive an engraved silver salver.
Players were nominated by a team of panellists including Radio 5 Live’s Mark Clemmit, The Daily Telegraph’s Ricky George, Sky Sports’ Soccer Saturday anchorman Jeff Stelling.
David Watters, news editor of The Non League Paper and FA Chief Executive Brian Barwick, in conjunction with FA personnel attending FA Cup matches.
The winning player will automatically join The FA’s Team of The FA Cup, guaranteeing VIP attendance at the 125th FA Cup final. The Team of The FA Cup comprises Player of the Round winners from the First Qualifying Round to the Semi Final.
