Brentford's FA Cup adventure came to an end at The Valley as Charlton made it through to the Sixth Round for only the second time in the past ten years.

Meanwhile, West Ham and Bolton need a replay to decide their fifth round fixture after a disappointing clash finished 0-0. Martin Allen's Brentford, flying high in League One, had beaten Premiership Sunderland in a famous Cup upset last time out, but they could not repeat the feat in south east London.

Without Fourth Round hero DJ Campbell, sold to Birmingham shortly after netting both the goals that beat Sunderland, Brentford lacked a cutting edge.

But they had an uphill task from as early as the third minute when Darren Bent latched onto Radostin Kishishev's pass and fired past goalkeeper Stuart Nelson for his 17th goal of the season.

The Bees continued to battle, most notably through powerful duo Marcus Gayle and Lloyd Owusu, but they suffered another blow shortly before half-time.

Charlton won a free-kick just outside the box and Jay Bothroyd found the back of the net, although his strike took a deflection to send the ball past the unfortunate Nelson.

This time last year Brentford staged a dramatic comeback to claim a 2-2 draw in a fifth round clash at Southampton after they had trailed by two goals inside 36 minutes.

But this time there was to be no stirring recovery with Bryan Hughes making it 3-0 just past the hour mark as he converted in style from a Shaun Bartlett through ball.

There was late reward for Allen's troops when Isaiah Rankin swept in a late consolation following a scramble deep in the box from a long throw and it might have been an even more exciting finish had Sam Sodje's header gone in rather that striking the post.

Meanwhile, up at the Reebok Stadium, there was little for either Bolton or West Ham fans to shout about in a scrappy first-half. Dean Ashton was wasteful for the visitors, while Trotters midfielder Gary Speed headed wide as clear-cut chances were at a premium.

Bolton took more of the initiative after the break, but the first shot on target did not arrive until 68 minutes and Shaka Hislop was equal to the effort from Kevin Davies.

West Ham looked content to soak up the pressure and take the fixture to a replay at Upton Park and they achieved their aim as the game petered out in a goalless draw.
