Brentford and Colchester were the League One heroes in The FA Cup Fourth Round by causing the biggest upsets on a day of shock results.

Brentford dumped Premiership outfit Sunderland out at Griffin Park with a 2-1 win, while Colchester thrashed Championship side Derby 3-1.

But there were plenty of other surprises as Reading drew with Premier League Birmingham and Coventry earning a replay against Middlesbrough.

However, the outstanding performance of the day was undeniably in west London where two Dudley 'DJ' Campbell goals sent Sunderland spinning.

Campbell waltzed his way through the defence and slotted past Kelvin Davis for his first, but Julio Arca grabbed an equaliser in fortunate circumstances as his cross deceived Bees keeper Stuart Nelson and floated into the net.

A replay looked on the cards until the very last minute when Lloyd Owusu flicked on a long ball and Campbell crashed his shot into the net to get the Bees buzzing.

There were similar scenes of joy at Layer Road where Colchester ran riot against Derby. Neil Danns scored two goals with deflected shots, but the Essex side were well worth their comfortable win after an awesome display, with Richard Garcia capping the result with a third goal.

Tommy Smith pulled one back with a penalty, but it was far too little, too late.

Reading have been flying at the top of the Championship and proved they have the quality to cope in the Premiership by running Steve Bruce's side very close.

The Royals beat West Brom in a thrilling third round replay and created more misery in the West Midlands as Shane Long's goal almost put an end to Birmingham's Cup hopes, but David Dunn spared them any blushes. Middlesbrough also face a tricky replay after being pegged back at Coventry.

Jimmy Floyd Hasselbaink put Boro ahead, but Stern John quickly equalised and the Sky Blues will have another go at the Riverside next midweek.

Charlton will be relieved they do not need another game against battling Leyton Orient, although they needed a late winner from Jay Bothroyd to seal a 2-1 win.

Elswhere, West Ham won a ding-dong all-Premiership encounter against Blackburn 4-2, while Aston Villa just edged past Port Vale 3-1. Everton held Chelsea to a 1-1 draw at Goodison Park, while a replay is also needed in the Preston versus Crystal Palace tie.

Stoke are in round five after a 2-1 win over Walsall, as are Manchester City who had Andy Cole to thank for their victory over League Cup finalists Wigan. Kenwyne Jones was another striker to net a vital late winner to send Southampton through against Leicester.
