The curse of the former player struck as Tim Cahill scored the only goal to set-up a Fourth Round clash with Premier League champions Chelsea.

The Australian, who was a key member of the Millwall side which reached the 2003 FA Cup Final, popped up to haunt his former employers in the 72nd minute.

After good work by Mikael Arteta down the right, Cahill managed to get on the end of James Beattie's cross to deflect home past the impressive Andy Marshall.

The Millwall stopper had been in fine form, making a number of saves as Everton dominated the tie.

His first meaningful stop was from Beattie while at the other end, former Chelsea midfielder Jody Morris curled high and wide on a rare foray into the Everton half.

Marshall made a wonderful save off Cahill's second half header, but the hosts might have enjoyed a slightly less fraught evening had two efforts, one from Kevin Kilbane and the other from Phil Neville, not hit the woodwork.
