Brayson's Cup double
Monday, 14 November 2005.
Northwich Victoria’s Paul Brayson has made FA Cup history by becoming the first player ever to win The FA Cup Player of the Round award twice in one season.
Brayson, who scored a hat-trick in the shock 3-1 win over Morecambe, was nominated for The FA’s Player of the Round award, having already been selected for The FA’s Team of The FA Cup following his second qualifying round hat-trick in Northwich’s 4 – 1 win over Frickley Athletic.
The winners of the First Round proper replay tonight between Woking and Southport will host the Vics in the Second Round at the beginning of December.
The Player of the Round vote saw Brayson chasing the lead at the beginning of the week as Colchester United’s Mark Yeates looked like he was set to win. But after catching the on-loan winger from Spurs on Friday, Brayson stormed ahead.
A weekend of fans’ voting saw Paul Brayson poll 32 per cent of the 47,000 votes cast to win The FA Cup ‘Player of the Round’ award for the second time in the competition.
Colchester United’s Mark Yeates missed out on the award by only a slim margin, ending with 29% of the vote. Yeates was closely followed by Weymouth ‘keeper Jason Matthews who polled 28 per cent with Stevenage Borough’s George Boyd and Burscough captain Karl Bell claiming 5 per cent of the vote each.
In addition to being crowned FA Cup Player of the Round, Paul has also joined the Team of The FA Cup for the second time, which guarantees attendance at The FA Cup final and a half-time introduction to the crowd.
Finally, Paul has won a further £1000 worth of UMBRO football kit for a local school, club or organisation of his choice.
The Team of The FA Cup comprises Player of the Round winners from the First Qualifying Round to the Semi Final. In the last two years several Premiership players have featured in the team alongside non-league players, including Jose Antonio Reyes, Freddie Ljungberg, Shay Given and Ruud van Nistelrooy.
Gosport Borough’s Jamie Laidlaw, Leamington’s Alex Rodman and Eastbourne Borough’s Stuart Tuck are the other Player of the Round winners in this season’s Team of The FA Cup and will enjoy VIP attendance at the 125th FA Cup final at the new Wembley Stadium next May.
TheFA.com will bring you an interview with Paul in the build-up to The FA Cup Second Round Proper.
