Liverpool won The FA Cup for the fifth time some 13 years ago when goals from Michael Thomas and Ian Rush defeated Sunderland at Wembley.

Thomas could actually have given the Merseysiders the lead after only nine minutes, shooting too high as Tony Norman came out to close him down, it had been Sunderland who produced the better of the opportunities.

Bruce Grobbelaar had to save at his near post from Anton Rogan, John Byrne fluffed his shot from an excellent position and a goal-bound shot from Paul Bracewell was diverted involuntarily for a corner by Mark Wright.

Both teams then felt that they should have been awarded penalty kicks, especially Liverpool for a poor tackle by Bracewell on the excellent young winger Steve McManaman.

Two minutes after the break, McManaman weaved inside from the right-side, laying the ball inside for Thomas, who let it bounce once and then, leaning to his left, struck it fiercely beyond Norman's fingers and into the net.

Dean Saunders then headed against the bar in the 69th minute and a minute later the second goal was delivered from the devastating boot of Ian Rush, his fifth Wembley goal in three Cup Finals.
