Henry feared he had no chance of playing for the Gunners against Manchester United at Cardiff on 21 May, but now his groin injury is on the mend.

The striker hasn't played since 09 April and manager Arsene Wenger insisted only recently that he would not be ready to face Everton in the club's penultimate Premiership game of the season on Wednesday.

However Henry, who has scored 31 goals for club and country this season, has made quick progress and is now in contention.

Wenger said: "Thierry is back with us in the squad, that's very good. I'm very surprised that he's back, but we will have to see how he reacts to playing and training regularly. I'm not sure if he will start, I don't think so.

"I expected the season to be over for him but he worked very hard. He thought the season was over too and he did need a break. But I feel he's done very well to get back.

"He's a one-off but everybody needs a breather. He always wants to play but maybe we will have to be more cautious."

Wenger admits he is in two minds over whether to rush Henry back into action or whether to think more long-term.

"Will I have to be more cautious with him next season? It depends on what sort of pre-season we have. He's not over this injury yet and we will have to see that it doesn't come back, the inflammation in the groin that is.

"I wouldn't take the slightest risk with him, even for The Cup Final."

England defender Sol Campbell could also return to action against Everton and is also in contention for The FA Cup Final, giving Arsenal a double boost.
