Brentford 1-3 Southampton
The FA Cup, Fifth Round
01 March 2005
Griffin Park

Southampton set up a quarter-final tie with Manchester United as Brentford's brave FA Cup run came to an end at Griffin Park.

Harry Redknapp's side soaked up pressure for much of the game, but goals from Peter Crouch and Kevin Phillips were enough to help them through this fifth round replay.

Redknapp was full of praise for his players after the match and said: "I took a gamble by leaving six players out but I thought we did well.

"We knew it would be a tough place to come and the pitch would be difficult but to be honest I'm just pleased to be in the next round.

"At half-time we said we'd keep the ball better and we did just that."

And Redknapp saved a special mention for Brentford manager Martin Allen. He added: "He is a good manager and I'm sure he will get the chance to manage a top club in the future."

Brentford got off to the perfect start as Eddie Hutchinson put them ahead after just four minutes. The midfielder slotted the ball home after Paul Smith had saved from Jay Tabb.

However, Saints hit straight back as Peter Crouch levelled on 11 minutes as he followed up a Kevin Phillips volley.

Brentford had chances to regain the lead and hutchinson hit the bar with a header, but it was the Premiership side who went ahead after the hour mark through Phillips as he tucked away a neat cross from Crouch.

Brentford battled to try and grab a leveller, but their dreams of a cup clash with Man United died in the last minute as Crouch scored from close range after a Neil McCann cross.

The bees will take heart from their cup run and a sell-out crowd will prove a welcome boost to the club's financial situation.

Brentford boss Allen was proud of his side and said: "It was a cracking night. All you can ask is that the players give everything they've got.

"We played with passion and with quality. We competed for every ball, every pass and every challenge but in the end they just had a little bit too much quality.

"As a young manager I'm very proud of those players. We had a great start and had one or two chances but they fought back well."
