Ex-Portsmouth player Peter Crouch scored a dramatic penalty in the 91st minute to send his old club tumbling and Southampton into the last 16 of The FA Cup.

Crouch coolly slotted the ball past debutant goalkeeper Konstantios Chalkias after Matt Taylor was judged to have handled the ball in the box.

Matthew Oakley had opened the scoring in the 54th minute when his drive from 30 yards rocketed into the top left corner.

Pompey's response was immediate. Diomansy Kamara raced through the Southampton box before going to ground under pressure from Claus Lundekvam. Yakubu stepped up to take the spot kick, sending the ball low into the corner of the net for his fourth penalty this season.

A little spice was added to this strangely subdued tie when Kamara received his marching orders from referee Steve Bennett. The striker was shown a second yellow card - presumably for deliberate handball - after stumbling and then clutching hold of the ball.

Graeme Souness was handed the perfect tonic after a difficult few days as Newcastle comfortably dispatched Coventry with a 3-1 win.

Alan Shearer opened the scoring with his 20th FA Cup goal and Shola Ameobi added a second before Dele Adebola pulled one back for Coventry. Then Celestine Babayaro restored Newcastle's two goal cushion with a low shot that took a brief deflection.

Blackburn cruised past Colchester 3-0 at Ewood Park thanks to a bizarre own goal by Kevin Watson. His back pass looked easy for goalkeeper Aidan Davidson but the stopper swung his boot wildly at the ball, clutching thin air as the ball trickled under his foot and into the net.

Jemal Johnson, making his debut, added a second before Dominic Matteo popped up with a third goal at the far post, supplied from a Robbie Savage free kick.

Everton always looked in control of the battle with the Championship's Sunderland, James McFadden James Beattie and Tim Cahill all scoring in a comfortable 3-0 win.

Arsene Wenger's Arsenal had to wait until the 53rd minute to take the lead against a defiant Wolves side. Patrick Vieira scored from the spot after Thierry Henry had been fouled in the area by Michael Oakes, and Freddie Ljungberg added a second eight minutes from time.

Yeovil were unlucky not to overcome Premiership Charlton. Bryan Hughes put the Londoners in front after he converted Herman Hreidarsson's knock-down, but plucky Yeovil drew level shortly before the break when Paul Terry surged into the box to slot past Dean Kiely. Francis Jeffers put Charlton back in front before Shaun Bartlett added a third and, though Yeovil were handed a way back into the tie when ex-Southampton player Arron Davis pulled one back, it was the Premiership side who went through 3-2.

Jamie Scowcroft's late winner for Leicester broke the home side's hearts when he scored in the 90th minute against Reading. Teammate Gareth Williams had already cancelled out Nicky Forster's opener to give Leicester a 2-1 win.

West Brom's Robert Earnshaw continued his amazing record in The FA Cup when his 17th-minute strike helped The Baggies draw 1-1 with Tottenham. The Welsh International has now scored 13 goals in 15 FA Cup ties. Jemain Defoe equalised from the spot with his 16th goal of the season on 31 minutes after he had been fouled in the box by Darren Purse.

Marlon King's 10th minute strike was enough to silence Peterborough's 4,000 travelling fans in Nottingham Forest's 1-0 win.

Ian Moore scored a brace for Burnley as they ran out 2-0 winners against Bournemouth..

Derby earned themselves a replay at Craven Cottage after a 1-1 draw at home to Fulham. The home side took the lead through Marcus Tudgay but an inspired substitution by Chris Coleman saw Collins John thrown into the fray. John had only been on the pitch a matter of seconds before he latched on to Mark Pembridge's through ball before firing into the net.

Sheffield Utd's Phil Jagielka cancelled out Marlon Harewood's 14th goal of the season in a match that finished all square at Upton Park, while Brentford and Hartlepool shared a 0-0 draw.
