Exeter City’s teenage super-sub Dean Moxey has won The FA Cup Player of the Round award.
He is the sixth player to join the prestigious ‘Team of The FA Cup’, guaranteeing him FA Cup glory as a VIP guest at The FA Cup Final next May and a half-time introduction to the crowd.
Moxey scored one of the competition’s most memorable goals in the Second Round 2-1 victory over League One Doncaster Rovers, his long-range looping shot earning Exeter a dream trip to Old Trafford to face The FA Cup holders on 8 January 2005.
And the 18-year-old defender was delighted to win the award: “It was amazing to be nominated, although all the lads deserve recognition for putting in a fantastic team performance and getting through to the next round," he said.
"We can’t wait for the game against Manchester United but we are still very much focussing on getting back into the league.”
Moxey gained 47% of the 18,694 fans’ vote in our online poll beating four other shortlisted players to win the ‘Player of the Round’ award, run in partnership with UMBRO. An interesting week of voting saw the closest poll to date until Moxey moved ahead in the final stages.
The final result saw second place go to Colchester United’s Greg Halford who scooped 25% of the vote, followed by Oldham Athletic’s Chris Killen with 12%. Moxey’s non-League colleague DJ Campbell of Yeading polled 9% of the vote and in last place Hartlepool United’s Chris Westwood received 7%.
Dean has won £1000 worth of UMBRO football kit and equipment for a local school, club or organisation of his choice. He will also be presented with an engraved silver salver.
The Team of The FA Cup will comprise Player of the Round winners from the First Qualifying Round to the Semi-Final. Last year’s team included five non-League players as well as Premiership stars Jose Antonio Reyes, Freddie Ljungberg and Bruno Cheyrou.
