AFC Wimbledon’s hat-trick hero Rob Ursell has won The FA Cup Player of the Round award in a landslide victory.
He is the second player to join the prestigious ‘Team of the FA Cup’, guaranteeing him a VIP seat at The FA Cup final next May and a half-time introduction to the crowd.
Rob, who scored all three goals within 53 minutes in AFC Wimbledon’s 3-0 win over Dunstable Town in the FA Cup Second Qualifying Round, gained 67% of the 11,673 votes in on-line poll at TheFA.com.
Rob said he was delighted to win the award. “Winning the award is fantastic, it was just nice to be nominated in the first place. AFC Wimbledon has a huge fan base so I thought I might be in with a good chance and I would like to thank everyone for voting.
"I am looking forward to the next game against Thurrock which is going to be a tough match but I think we have a good chance.”
Rob was one of five FA Cup Second Qualifying round heroes short-listed for the Player of the Round award, run in partnership with UMBRO, after he was nominated by The Independent football writer Stuart Robertson.
In the race for the award Rob remained far ahead of his fellow nominees throughout the week of voting. He beat Maidstone United’s Simon Austin who polled 9% of the vote, Lee Chudy of AFC Newbury polled 10%, Paul Sykes of Stalybridge Celtic ended on 11%, while Lincoln United’s Gary Bull polled 3%.
Rob, whose goals earned AFC Wimbledon a third FA Cup Qualifying Round tie at home to Thurrock on Saturday 16 October, wins £1000 worth of UMBRO football kit and equipment for a local school, club or organisation of his choice. He also wins an engraved silver salver.
The Team of The FA Cup will comprise Player of the Round winners from the First Qualifying Round to the Semi Final. Last year’s team included five non-league players as well as Premiership stars Jose Antonio Reyes, Freddie Ljungberg and Bruno Cheyrou.
Football experts from BBC 5 Live, The Daily Telegraph, The Times, The Independent and The Non League Paper are involved in the Player of the Round nomination process.
Kevin Slack of Bishop’s Cleeve FC was the first player to be selected for The FA’s Team of The FA Cup. Kevin scored all five goals in a 5-3 First Qualifying Round victory over Highworth Town.
