Player of the Round: A silver salver is up for grabs for the winner each round
Five stars chasing awardMonday, 04 October 2004.
Five FA Cup stars have been nominated by our panel for The FA’s prestigious FA Cup ‘Player of the Round’ award, run in partnership with UMBRO, after their Second Round Qualifying heroics.
They include two hat-trick heroes, two players who scored twice and another who scored a dramatic last minute equaliser - in the seventh minute of added time!
In the running for the award are AFC Wimbledon’s midfielder Rob Ursell, who hit the net three times in his side’s 3-0 win over Dunstable Town, and Lincoln United’s Gary Bull, cousin of former Wolves and England striker Steve, who scored three in a 5-0 victory over Winsford United.
Joining them are AFC Newbury’s Lee Chudy, who scored twice in a 4-2 win over his former club Basingstoke Town and Maidstone United’s Simon Austin, two-goal hero in a 2-1 win over Redbridge. Maidstone deserve special mention after progressing at the expense of a team three leagues above them.
Completing the line-up is Stalybridge Celtic’s Paul Sykes, who scored a dramatic equaliser in the seventh minute of added time, enabling his side to earn a home replay this Tuesday, after drawing 3-3 away at Barrow.
Now fans are being urged to voice their support for all five players by voting in our poll on the homepage and FA Cup pillar - votes must be cast by 9.00am on Monday 11 October.
The player who secures the most votes will be crowned FA Cup ‘Player of the Round’ and will win £1000 worth of UMBRO football kit and equipment for a local school, club or organisation of his choice.
He will also receive an engraved silver salver and an UMBRO kit player package.
The successful player will also be the first player to join The Team of The FA Cup, guaranteeing VIP attendance at The FA Cup final at the Millennium Stadium on Saturday 21 May 2005 and a chance-of-a-lifetime introduction to the crowd, pitch side at half time.
The only other player already guaranteed a place in this season’s Team of The FA Cup is Bishop’s Cleeve FC’s Kevin Slack who scored all five in a 5-3 First Qualifying Round win over Highworth Town.
Kevin continued his scoring streak at the weekend, hitting the net twice as Bishop’s Cleeve maintained their FA Cup winning ways, beating AFC Totton 4-1.
The Team of The FA Cup will comprise Player of the Round winners from the First Qualifying round to the Semi Final. Last year’s team included five non-league players as well as Premiership stars Jose Antonio Reyes, Freddie Ljungberg and Bruno Cheyrou.
Sir Trevor Brooking, The FA’s Director of Football Development, said: “The FA Cup always produces heroic performances that live long in the memory of fans.
"Performances at the weekend may not generate the same column inches as a semi-final winning goal, but the players’ outstanding contributions to the competition are something that The FA is delighted to recognise.
“All five players thoroughly deserve to be in the running for The FA Player of the Round award. Now fans have an opportunity to show their support to try and help them win £1000 worth of UMBRO kit to boost grass roots football in the local community as well as book their place at The FA Cup Final in eight months time.”
Football experts from BBC Radio 5 Live, The Daily Telegraph, The Times, The Independent and The Non League Paper are involved in the Player of the Round nomination process.
