FA CUP FOCUS: Trevor Brooking has announced the nomination of Kevin Slack for The FA’s prestigious FA Cup ‘Player of the Round’ award, after his First Qualifying round heroics for Bishop’s Cleeve FC at the weekend.
After four initial nominations were announced yesterday, Sir Trevor Brooking, The FA's Director of Football Development has this afternoon confirmed that after contact from Bishop’s Cleeve fans and officials, Kevin’s outstanding performance will also be recognised.
Kevin scored all five of his team’s goals in its 5 – 3 away victory over Highworth Town, a feat that Brooking felt could not be ignored. Kevin's superb goal scoring not only saw his team storm through to the Second Qualifying round where they will meet AFC Totton but earned Bishop’s Cleeve FC £2250 for its progress in the competition.
“The FA Cup always produces heroic performances that live long in the memory of fans. Kevin’s performance at the weekend may not generate the same column inches as a winning goal in the latter stages of the competition, but his outstanding contribution to the competition is something that The FA is delighted to recognise," said Brooking.
“Kevin thoroughly deserves to be in the running for The FA Player of the Round award. Now Bishop’s Cleeve fans have an opportunity to show their support to try and help Kevin win £1000 worth of UMBRO kit to boost grass roots football in the local community as well as book his place at The FA Cup Final in eight months time.”
Supporters of Bishop’s Cleeve can get behind Kevin by voting in our online poll, which can be found on the homepage or on The FA Cup pillar.
Fans have just seven days to register their support as votes must be cast by 9.00am on Monday, September 27.
Kevin now joins four other players shortlisted for The FA Cup Player of the Round award, run in partnership with UMBRO. The others are Chris Ward of Bamber Bridge FC, Allan Arthur of Beaconsfield SYCOB, Lee Thompson of Skelmersdale United and Chris Henson of Shepshed Dynamo.
If Kevin secures the most votes, he will be crowned ‘Player of the Round’ and win £1000 worth of UMBRO football kit and equipment for a local school, club or organisation of his choice. He will also receive an engraved silver salver.
If successful, Kevin will also be the first player to join The Team of The FA Cup, guaranteeing VIP attendance at The FA Cup final at the Millennium Stadium on Saturday May 21, 2005 and a chance-of-a-lifetime introduction to the crowd, pitch side at half time.
The Team of The FA Cup will comprise Player of the Round winners from the First Qualifying round to the Semi Final. Last year’s team included five non-league players as well as Premiership stars Jose Antonio Reyes, Freddie Ljungberg and Bruno Cheyrou.
