Shepshed Dynamo’s Chris Henson currently leads the Player of the Round poll.
Henson leads poll
Friday, 24 September 2004.
Thousands of votes have been registered as fans vote for who they think should be named as the Player of the Round for The FA Cup First Round Qualifying.
Shepshed Dynamo’s Chris Henson, who scored all four goals in his club’s 4-2 defeat of Grantham, leads the poll so far having picked up 35% of the 15,000 votes registered.
He is closely followed by Bishop's Cleeve FC's Kevin Slack, who is just one percentage point behind.
Slack scored all five of his team’s goals in its 5-3 away victory over Highworth Town, and though he was not on the original list of four nominees, his feat was one that FA Director of Football Development Sir Trevor Brooking felt could not be ignored and Slack was duly added to the shortlist.
Skelmersdale United’s Lee Thompson, who bagged both goals in the 2-0 shock victory over Blyth Spartans, has won 28% of the votes and is still in with a good chance of winning the award, though it would take a remarkable run of votes for one of the final two nominees to win.
Bamber Bridge’s Chris Ward, who scored an 18-minute hat-trick in a 6-0 win over Blackpool Mechanics, has won 2% of the votes cast whilst Allan Arthur, who starred in Beaconsfield SYCOB’s 5-3 win over Hitchin, has just 1%.
Fans have just seven days to register their support as votes must be cast by 9.00am on Monday 27 September.
The player who secures the most votes will be crowned FA Cup ‘Player of the Round’ and will win £1000 worth of UMBRO football kit and equipment for a local school, club or organisation of his choice.
He will also receive an engraved silver salver and an UMBRO kit player package.
The successful player will also be the first player to join The Team of The FA Cup, guaranteeing VIP attendance at The FA Cup Final at the Millennium Stadium on Saturday 21 May 2005 and a chance-of-a-lifetime introduction to the crowd, pitch side at half time.
The Team of The FA Cup will comprise Player of the Round winners from the First Qualifying round to the Semi Final.
