It included a sprinkling of clubs with FA Cup pedigrees - like Altrincham, Bishop’s Stortford, Hayes, Hornchurch, Kettering Town and Sutton United.

Sutton were the last non-League club to knock out a side from the top division, Coventry City famously succumbing at Gander Green Lane in 1989.

In today’s draw Sutton were given an away tie at Eastbourne Borough. Both sides are struggling near the bottom of the Conference South.

Big-spending Hornchurch, currently topping that division, reached the Second Round Proper last season before Tranmere Rovers put them out and the "Urchins" start the new Cup campaign with an away tie at the winners of the Harwich & Parkeston v Ruislip Manor replay.

Altrincham of the Conference North have played Tottenham and Everton in The Cup and got through to the Fourth Round Proper in 1986.

They face a home tie with Marine, who reached the Third Round Proper in 1993, if the Merseysiders win tomorrow’s replay at Farsley Celtic.

The date for these Second Qualifying Round matches is 02 October.

The 124th FA Cup competition has an all-time record entry of 661 clubs. The previous record of 656 was set in the 1920s!

There have already been three rounds and the weekend’s 124 ties in the First Qualifying Round saw the demise of noted Cup fighters like Blyth Spartans, Chelmsford City, Harlow Town and Marlow.

Spartans won through to the Fifth Round Proper in 1978 and were a couple of minutes from beating Wrexham to set up a quarter final with mighty Arsenal.

On Saturday they lost 0-2 at home to Skelmersdale United, Wembley winners in the old FA Amateur Cup in 1971. "Skem" now entertain Burscough, FA Trophy winners in 2003.

Another Saturday winner was AFC Wimbledon, the Ryman Leaguers playing in their first FA Cup competition.

Their 1-0 success at Dover was watched by more than 2,000 and another big crowd is certain when they go to Dunstable Town in the next round.
