The FA has given international Premiership and Nationwide stars the chance to award substantial kit donations to worthy causes in their home countries.
Thanks to The FA’s Player of The Round Award, run in partnership with UMBRO, Arsenal’s Freddie Ljungberg, Jose Antonio Reyes and Millwall midfielder Tim Cahill have donated over £6000 worth of kit to local clubs in their respective countries.
All three players were recognised for their outstanding performance in this year’s FA Cup at various stages of the competition. The Player of The Round winners were decided by fans all over the country by voting at TheFA.com.
Over 1.5 million votes were collectively polled in Player of the Round competitions this season with football fans countrywide clambering to back the competition’s star performers.
Ljungberg emerged victorious from the Fifth Round vote after being nominated for his two goal haul in Arsenal’s 5-1 victory against Portsmouth.
The Swedish international has decided to send the £1500 kit donation back home to Sweden. Members of The Three Hearts Disability Club in Halmstad, Freddie’s home town in Sweden, are set to receive their UMBRO kit.
Fellow Arsenal star Jose Antonio Reyes, has also helped his home town reap the rewards of The FA Player of The Round award.
Utrera FC, situated in a small town 15 miles outside of Seville, await the arrival of their £1500 worth of UMBRO kit, after Jose received the fans vote for his sparkling two-goal haul in Arsenal’s 2-1 sixth round win over Chelsea.
Millwall midfielder Cahill was awarded his £3000 worth of UMBRO kit, along with the prestigious Player of The Round silver slaver, after he scored the semi final winner against fellow nationwide side Sunderland.
The Australian international has fond memories of his time as a 14 year-old in Western Samoa and has charged the country’s national FA with the job of distributing the substantial kit donation to children playing football in Western Samoa.
Trevor Brooking, FA Director of Football said: “By giving the Player of The Round Winners the chance to reward their local clubs and schools through their own achievement, is a tremendous way of ensuring The FA Cup has a positive impact on grass roots football, from both a domestic and international perspective.”
