The build-up to this match was all about George Best's 1970 six-goal massacre when the Reds had last played Northampton Town.
But without Best's 21st century goalscoring equivalent Ruud van Nistelrooy, the Cobblers were spared a repeat destruction.
This was the real FA Cup with the Premiership gentry against the Third Division minnows.
Sir Alex Ferguson could hardly remember the last time United had been involved in a tie like this having had so many all-Premiership ties in recent years.

The Fourth Round presented Millwall with Conference side Telford and a trip out of town and up to Shropshire.
The weather did its best to turn the tie on its head, with the first attempt called-off the morning of the game.
In the end it took a midweek kick-off and when the game was eventually played, the LIons took an early advantage when Paul Ifill opened the scoring.
Further sustained pressure was fiercely resisted until the 83rd minute when Dennis Wise drilled a 20-yarder through a sea of legs to seal victory.
