FA Cup Sixth Round
Sunday 07 March

A spirited display from Tranmere Rovers saw them earn a home replay after drawing their FA Cup Sixth Round match against Millwall.

The whole side performed admirably but ultimately Rovers were thankful to goalkeeper John Achterberg after the tall Dutchman saved Kevin Muscat's second-half penalty.

Virtually all the best chances of the game fell for the home side but some poor finishing combined with the good work of Achterberg kept the tie scoreless.

Millwall's impressive midfielder, Tim Cahill, was twice denied by the keeper and player-manager Dennis Wise saw his free-kick turned away to safety.

In a rather quiet first half, Achterberg's first save of the match denied Wise after a quarter of an hour before Millwall started to up the pressure.

Ifill had a shot blocked before Cahill struck a good effort from 20 yards out which was again dealt with by the composed Tranmere defence.

Rovers were pegged back in their own half and ten minutes before half-time should, but for Achterberg's heroics, have gone behind. Wise swung over another corner but the goalkeeper did wonderfully well to stretch out and divert Cahill's header away.

Tranmere manager Brian Little evidently told his side to be slightly more attack-minded in the second period, as straight from the re-start they looked brighter in the middle and final thirds of the pitch.

Andy Marshall's first real save of the match punched away Gareth Roberts' 20-yard volley but one still felt that Millwall would score first.

And the home side should have scored when, fifteen minutes from time, they were awarded a penalty after Ryan Taylor had shoved Cahill.

Kevin Muscat's spot-kick was central but was only just reached by the outstretched arm of Achterberg, who had dived to his right.

Tranmere held firm for the remainder of the game and they will now fancy their chances in the replay at Prenton Park.
