Norman was capped 38 times for Northern Ireland, playing for them in the 1982 World Cup when he was still 17. He had seven years with United and a further couple in the top flight with Everton. He now works as the PFA’s Podiatrist - that means he goes round the clubs checking that their young players are walking and running the right way, the healthy way.

Norman came down on the train from Manchester this morning to take part in his first FA Cup draw.

He told TheFA.com: "This is the first time I’ve done a draw. I’ve been asked a couple of times before but had other commitments and unfortunately couldn’t do it. I had people ‘phoning me early this morning to make sure I was on my way!"

On his Cup Finals with United he said: "I played in both games in 1983. We didn’t play particularly well in the first match with Brighton and were lucky to get a draw to be fair. But we won the replay 4-0 and I scored our second goal with a header.

"I think I’m still the youngest player to score in a Cup Final. A lot of people think I’m also the youngest to appear in a Final - but I know Paul Allen of West Ham was younger than me in 1980. My goal in the 110th minute of the 1985 Final won the Cup for United. We were down to ten men and I deliberately used an Everton defender as a screen and curled the ball round him.

"I’ve seen Dennis Bergkamp do that a few times since then…but I was the first!

"There’s something really special about The FA Cup. Wherever I am in the world people remember my goal in 1985 at Wembley. It’s as though it’s the only thing I ever did in my career!"

Was Norman at the United v City Cup clash at the weekend?

"Yes, I was working in hospitality at Old Trafford on Saturday. It’s funny but I watched most of the game on one of the TV screens. We were too busy to go out and look at the action on the pitch."
