Arsenal’s young Spanish starlet Jose Antonio Reyes has scooped the FA Cup ‘Player of the Round’ Award after 546,000 votes were registered in an on-line poll here TheFA.com.
By accumulating the most votes, as Arsenal fans employed multiple voting tactics, Reyes also earns a place in the inaugural FA Team of The FA Cup, becoming only the second Premier League player to join this elite team of outstanding performers from this season's FA Cup competition.
Reyes was one of three players shortlisted for the prestigious award, run in partnership with UMBRO, for The FA Cup Fifth Round Proper, and polled 65% of the votes registered in just five days at TheFA.com, beating Manchester United keeper Tim Howard (just 2%) and Tranmere striker Iain Hume (35%) by a landslide majority.
Reyes struck twice in five second-half minutes giving the Gunners a 2-1 victory against Premiership rivals Chelsea in last Sunday's televised tie.
An unstoppable left foot rocket and a first-time finish from a Vieira pass took Arsenal through to the Sixth Round and an away tie to either Liverpool or Portsmouth.
As recognition of his membership to this year’s Team of The FA Cup, Jose will be afforded The FA VIP treatment at this year’s FA Cup Final and will be honoured on the pitch before the Cardiff crowd, unless he lines up in the Final itself.
Trevor Brooking, The FA’s Head of Football Development, said; "I think this is a fitting and positive tribute to Jose Antonio and I am sure he will have a fantastic day out at the Millennium Stadium in May, either as our guest or as or maybe as part of an Arsenal FA Cup Final Team.
"The FA Cup is a magical competition. I was lucky enough to play in and win two FA Cup finals, which included scoring the winning goal in the 1980 final.
"By introducing the Player of the Round and the Team of The Cup awards, The FA is acknowledging Jose Antonio and a number of other heroes who this season will have contributed to some great results since the competition began in August."
So far over 1.2million votes have been collectively polled in Player of the Round competitions this season, as football fans countrywide clamber to back the competition’s star performers. Fans who vote on-line at TheFA.com can win two tickets to the next FA Cup round match of their choice.
Jose Antonio wins £1500 of UMBRO kit and equipment to donate to a school or club of his choice, as well as an UMBRO kit player package including XAI boots and training gear and an engraved silver salver.
