Margate and Vauxhall steal the show with historic wins...
After the previous night of Cup upsets, the remaining 1st round replay had Nigel Clough's Burton Albion coming up against Oldham Athletic on Wednesday and another surprise was on the cards. However, though the Conference side came close, it was Iain Dowie's Division Two high-flyers Oldham Athletic who held strong through a tense penalty shoot-out to win 5-4 after the sides drew 2-2 at the end of extra time. The Latics now face Cheltenham in round two.
On Tuesday UniBond Premier League side Vauxhall Motors caused a huge FA Cup upset by knocking out Second Division Queens Park Rangers 4-3 on penalties in their first-round replay at Loftus Road.
QPR took an 18th-minute lead after Andy Thomson scored from Gino Padula's pass, but the Motormen were level within four minutes as former Liverpool trainee Phil Brazier equalised. Extra-time yielded no further goals, but QPR made a terrible start to the penalty shoot-out when Paul Furlong's first kick was saved by Motors goalkeeper Andy Ralphe.
The non-leaguers confidently converted all their penalties, and then Rangers striker Karl Connolly put the decisive kick wide to give Vauxhall Motors an away tie against Macclesfield.
Nationwide Conference side Margate also sprang a surprise by beating Third Division side Leyton Orient 1-0 at Dover's Crabble ground. The winner in their first-round replay came from Sierra Leone international John Keister, who blasted in a 51st-minute penalty after Sam Sodje had been fouled by Justin Miller.
Margate will face Second Division big-spenders Cardiff in round two after Lennie Lawrence's side beat Tranmere 2-1 in a replay at Ninian Park. Tranmere went ahead when Mickey Mellon finished off a three-man move on the stroke of half-time. But Cardiff equalised on the hour mark when former Middlesbrough striker Andy Campbell capitalised on some poor defending. The Welsh side got their winner eight minutes later through James Collins, and things got even worse for Tranmere soon afterwards when goalkeeper John Achterberg was sent off for serious foul play.
UniBond Premier League Runcorn fought bravely but ultimately lost 2-1 to Bristol Rovers at the Autoquest Stadium. Giuliano Grazioli headed the Pirates in front in the 17th minute, but Runcorn quickly equalised when Adam Barrett put through his own goal. Liam Watson hit the post for the non-leaguers six minutes from the end of normal time, but the professionals had more left in the tank and made it 3-1 thanks to Wayne Carlisle (108) and David Gilroy (119). Runcorn were not helped by the sending-off of Lee Parle in the 102nd minute.
There was also disappointment for Forest Green against Exeter at St James Park. Former Grecians favourite Jon Richardson put the Conference side ahead (21), but Gareth Sheldon equalised four minutes later. With the Gloucestershire side pressing and time running out, Exeter nicked a winner in the 85th minute courtesy of Matthew Lock.
Exeter will next host in-form Rushden & Diamonds, who extended their unbeaten run to seven matches as they saw off fellow Third Division side Kidderminster at Nene Park thanks to Wales youth international Robert Duffy's 36th-minute strike and a second from Stuart Wardley (67). Drewe Broughton pulled one back for the Harriers after 72 minutes.
Scarborough took Cambridge to extra-time at the Abbey Stadium where Scott Jordan scored in the final minute after Paul Wanless' 31st-minute opener. But an own goal by Mark Hotte in the 97th minute sealed the Seasiders' fate and took Cambridge through to face Northampton.
Scarborough's North Yorkshire rivals York are now paired with Brentford after Peter Duffield's 11th goal of the season two minutes from time gave the Minstermen a 2-1 win against the league's bottom club Swansea at Bootham Crescent. Duffield had given the hosts the lead, but Matt Murphy equalised for the Swans with 10 minutes to go.
New Hartlepool boss Mike Newell went out of the cup in his first home match in charge as his team let slip a 1-0 lead in the last two minutes to lose 2-1 to Southend. Marcus Richardson was quickest to react to put Hartlepool one up after Paul Smith's 63rd-minute free-kick came back off the crossbar. But Tesfaye Bramble equalised in the 88th minute, and seconds later Leon Cort nicked a surprise winner to set up a home clash with Bournemouth.
Richard Pears' double for Tiverton at Crawley looked to have put the Devon side on course for a second-round clash against Dagenham & Redbridge. But the home side stormed back, Nic McDonnell responding with two goals of his own and Warren Bagnall completing a remarkable turnaround with an 87th-minute winner.
