THE FA CUP FIRST ROUND PROPER
SATURDAY 16 NOVEMBER 2002

WINNING CLUBS TO RECEIVE £30,000

Nationwide Conference clubs Chester, Southport and Morecambe provided the major shocks of the FA Cup first round on Saturday as all three dumped out Second Division opponents.

Chester saw off Colchester at Layer Road thanks to Chris Tate's goal seven minutes from time, while Southport came back from 2-0 down to beat Notts County 4-2.

Danny Allsopp put the Magpies ahead in the eighth minute and made it two in the 41st minute but Steve Pickford reduced the deficit two minutes later. County had to play the entire second half with 10 men after Darren Caskey's 39th-minute red card and the Sandgrounders took full advantage as Pickford levelled (60), Peter Thomson gave them the lead (75) and Chris Lane made sure at the death.

Morecambe completed a wonderful day for the Conference's north-west clubs as Gary Thompson's last-minute winner saw them through against Chesterfield at Saltergate. Morecambe led through Lee Elam's 43rd-minute goal but a replay looked the best they could hope for when Gareth Davies equalised in the 74th minute until Thompson became the hero.

Northern Counties East League Premier Division side Harrogate Railway will be the smallest of minnows in the hat for round two after they came from behind to beat Slough Town 2-1.

Slough - who play in the Ryman Division One North - took the lead through Bryon Bubb's 30th-minute goal but Railway hit back and went through thanks to goals from Kevin Smith (53) and Steve Davey (68).

Nigel Clough seems to have inherited some of his father Brian's bad luck in the FA Cup after watching his Burton side come so close to springing the surprise of the round at Oldham. The Brewers led 2-1 against the Second Division's third-placed team with 14 seconds left when Fitz Hall equalised for the Latics.

Despite all his success as a manager, the FA Cup was the one major club trophy which eluded Brian Clough. At least Nigel's men will have a second chance in the replay at Eton Park.

Team Bath are out after their heroic run through the preliminary rounds, losing 4-2 at home to Mansfield in a midday kick-off. Their Second Division opponents had been on course to teach them a tough lesson as they raced into a 4-0 lead but the students threatened to come back and pulled two goals back through Carl Heiniger (71) and Caleb Kamara-Taylor (83).

Kamara-Taylor was then denied by a wonderful double save by Stags goalkeeper Kevin Pilkington and Barry Lavety hit the crossbar with three minutes to go.

Bristol City outclassed Heybridge Swifts as two goals apiece from Christian Roberts, Scott Murray and Leroy Lita - plus a penalty from Brian Tinnion - lifted them to a 7-0 win at the Ryman Premier League side's Scraley Road ground.

Tranmere and Cardiff will be forced to replay their match after it ended 2-2 at Prenton Park. Former Cardiff striker Simon Haworth - born in the Welsh capital - grabbed the 62nd-minute goal for Rovers which squared the match.
