On the FA Cup trail: Slough Town will be TheFA.com's featured team in the FA Cup first round after Tony Boot helped them beat Canvey Island in the fourth qualifying round on Saturday
Slough Town 3 CANVEY ISLAND 2
FA Cup 3rd Qualifying Round, Saturday October 12
Slough win £20,000 and will be at home to Harrogate Railway in the FA Cup first round
The famed giantkillers were given a taste of their own medicine. Canvey Island, who had taken three Football League scalps in the past two FA Cups won't be able to pull off a repeat this year after defeat at Slough, a division below them in the Ryman League.
It started according to plan with Jeff Minton setting up Scott Forbes to fire Canvey ahead after four minutes. However, the first real warning arrived in the 20th minute when the aptly-named Tony Boot hammered home a Slough equaliser.
The home side then took the lead eight minutes before the interval when Craig Davidson stuck out a leg to intercept Michael Gilkes' cross - and watched in horror as the ball span past his own goalkeeper Danny Potter.
Canvey fought back to level on the hour through substitute Bertie Brayley but the Boot was again put on the other foot with the winning goal after 76 minutes.
Tony Boot headed Gilkes' cross past Potter in-off the post to leave Canvey able to concentrate on the league.
Manager Jeff King was known for his entertaining TV interviews last year but the Canvey players won't want to be hearing from him just now.
"We were too arrogant - some of my players won't be here in a couple of weeks," stormed the disappointed boss.
