The FA County Youth Cup
Third Round
Saturday 1 December 2007
City Ground, Cambridge City FC
Cambridgeshire progressed to the last eight of The FA County Youth Cup on Saturday following a comprehensive victory over Sheffield and Hallamshire.
The visitors to Cambridge City’s Milton Road ground began the sharper, but once Cambridgeshire had settled down they began to produce some excellent football, which led to a number of goal scoring opportunities.
Some dogged defending and heroics from the Sheffield goalkeeper kept the home side at bay until Cambridgeshire pressure finally paid off with half an hour played.
A cross from the left found Jordan Patrick at the back post and he scored from a tight angle. Patrick was on target again shortly after, beating the offside trap and sliding the ball under the keeper to make it 2-0 just before half time.
After the change around, Cambridgeshire soon wrapped the game up and their football was rewarded with three goals, Adam Marriott scored a brace while Patrick completed his hat-trick.
Sheffield, to their credit, did not give up and continued to battle as they had done all game and they earned the consolation of two goals in a five-minute spell, which for a time knocked the Cambridgeshire team out of their stride.
But Alan Elbrow’s side soon regained their composure and scored a sixth and final goal through Rory McCauley with the clock running down.
Elsewhere, Liverpool FA squeezed through 1-0 away at Lincolnshire, Wiltshire edged an eight-goal thriller at home to Huntingdonshire and current holders West Riding ran out 2-0 winners against Surrey.
