Ryan Giggs believes Manchester United can repeat the heroics of last season after starting their campaign with victory over Portsmouth in The FA Community Shield at Wembley.

United had to settle for a 3-1 penalty shoot-out win, despite dominating both possession and chances throughout the game.

With the first piece of silverware now retained, Giggs believes today's clash can stand United in good stead for next weekend's Premier League opener against Newcastle United and the challenges that will follow as they look to defend their domestic and European double.

"It means a lot, you want to get off to a good start,'' admitted Giggs after the game.

"But it's really for fitness and the last game before the start of
the season.

"We want to start where we left off. It's going to be difficult - the
Champions League, Premier League, the cups, every competition is difficult.

"You have to have that hunger but I'm sure the lads have got that.''
