Sir Alex Ferguson
Wenger and Ferguson exclusive
Sunday, 10 August 2003.
As the new football season prepares to kick-off, Sir Alex Ferguson and Arsene Wenger have thrown down the gauntlet to their rivals, speaking exclusively to The FA Community Shield official match programme...
During the summer, Chelsea have spent more on transfer fees than every other Premier League club put together, while Arsenal have made only one signing and United have said goodbye to Beckham and Veron.
Sir Alex told the programme that this year's Premier League will be the toughest yet:
"We know it's a very difficult league to win and so do Arsenal now. And you can't ignore Newcastle or Liverpool either. Then there's Chelsea spending all their money too - I'm prepared for the hardest league of all time."
Wenger is predicting that the challenge will bring out some revelatory performances from his players. Speaking in the programme, he said:
"People think that transfers are the only way to sort problems out but my players have already shown that they can be the strongest. I am convinced we will have one or two revelations from the players we already have at the club.
"Don't worry - we have a good youth set-up and we'll bring some youngsters through now. It's time.
"In the last two years, of the four major domestic trophies, we've won three and we lost the fourth by a little margin."
