Kenny Dalglish (Liverpool, 1977)

Signed from Celtic for £440,000... made his debut in 0-0 Charity Shield draw with Man Utd... went on to be Kop legend

Tommy Docherty's young Manchester United side had beaten Liverpool 2-1 in the FA Cup Final in May - but a lot had happened between then and their Wembley reunion for the Charity Shield.

Liverpool had won the European Cup and then lost talisman Kevin Keegan to Hamburg, only to replace him with a Scottish hopeful called Kenny Dalglish. Manchester United knew all about Dalglish's reputation and his debut turned into a cautious affair despite the attacking potential from both teams.

Having used the Charity Shield as a 'tester', Dalglish went on to score on his league debut the following week against Middlesbrough. He ended the season by scoring the European Cup Final winner against Bruges, also at Wembley, and went onto win 14 major trophies with Liverpool, including the Double as player-manager in 1986.
