Gary Lineker (Everton, 1985)

Signed from Leicester City for £850,000, Lineker made his debut in 2-0 Charity Shield win against Man Utd and scored 38 goals for Everton during the season before flying off to the Mexico World Cup where he won the Golden Boot by scoring six times for the Three Lions.

Lineker arrived at Everton as a replacement for Andy Gray who had helped the club win the league championship and European Cup-Winners Cup in the previous season.

All eyes were on the new boy when Everton took on Manchester United in the Charity Shield, effectively a revenge mission for the Goodison Park side who were beaten by 10-man United in that year's FA Cup Final following the sending-off Kevin Moran.

The good news from Lineker is that he made a winning start for his new club, the bad news was that he was off the field when Everton scored their second goal through the man brought on to replace him, Adrian Heath.

However, Lineker bounced back to enjoy a fantastic season which yielded 38 goals in 52 games even though Everton's rivals Liverpool won the Double. Everton fans would argue he was too successful, after winning the Golden Boot at the 1986 World Cup, Lineker was off to Barcelona after only a year on Merseyside.
