Matt Smith scored a dramatic Oldham Athletic equaliser deep into injury time against Everton to earn the League One side another chance to claim a Premier League scalp.

David Moyes’ side seemed destined for a place in the quarter-finals after they came back from a goal down to lead right up to the last seconds.

But Smith, a former shelf-stacker, rose highest at a last minute corner to head the Latics to a memorable draw.

On-loan Reading man Jordan Obita had given Oldham a 13th minute lead after he finished a fantastic counter-attack following an Everton corner.

Their joy lasted just over ten minutes, though, as Victor Anichebe equalised with a smart half volley from just inside the Oldham penalty area.

Everton looked good value for a possible win when England international Phil Jagielka put them in front from a Kevin Mirallas corner three minutes after half-time.

But the drama was far from over as Smith, who scored twice against Liverpool in the last round, came on with half an hour to go.

And he waited right to the end to make his impact, as he was superior to everyone in a very crowded penalty area to head in Oldham’s equaliser and line up another Cup date at Goodison Park.
